LOST: ONE HARD DRIVE, GAINED: A BETTER PERSPECTIVE

I’ve got a mid-term tomorrow, so once again, my time here is limited. I’m sure I’ll do just fine on it, but stressing out beforehand is just my way…

I wrote this little essay for class that I wanted to post, but my hard drive crashed this week and all my photos, writing, paper creations, and work stuff is gone. My husband tried to salvage some things, but apparently once your hard drive starts sparking, it’s pretty much a goner. At least my music files were on a separate drive. And I have hard copies of most of the major stuff, like my resume and children’s plays. The photos and work stuff will be sorely missed, though.

My husband was expecting a major melt down when he told me that everything was gone. But after hearing that an acquaintance’s husband died last week, my lost hard drive didn’t even seem worth wasting a second thought on. It’s just stuff. The things that really matter are right in front of me and my energy is better spent appreciating them while they are still here.

So please go hug someone you love. And if you have time, back up your files too! (I will from now on, trust me…)

I’m off to enjoy a slow, snuggly Sunday and hope you do the same!

- A.

Awwww that is terrible you lost so many photos and writings on yoyr hard drive, that totally sucks and yeah hearing of your friend's husband's passing does put things in perspective, but it still stinks to lose all those mementos. I'm glad I have nothing important online, also I have no idea how to put certain things online so I guess that is good too.
Not only hugging people is good but sending them a mental hug is great, thinking of a person you adore, alive or dead and giving them hugs and positive thoughts and energy is wonderful too, I believe they may feel it. I know sometimes I just feel a burst of happiness and I wonder if somene is sending me positive vibes too.
I hope you are feeling healthy and happy Annie S.!

I got an external hard drive for back up with enough capacity to back my HD up 5 times over for about $100. It connects to the USB port and needs no drives to use in Windows XP. It may sound like alot of money but its worth it for sure.

I have a flash Drive too, they are small and can contain so much information and photos, etc. Mine was only 60 but they come in a variety of sizes, perfect for backup. I drop my pictures on CDs.

It's amazing how your friend's loss put this into perspective, isn't it? You've got a great attitude about it, and no what you have to do to save your "stuff" if it happens again!

really sorry about your hard drive...I know nothing about those things as I still am a kind of newbie with my computer--how do you know it a hard drive is failing?? is there some kind of warning before hand?
I am learning more and more things about computers by just being a blogger here--but heard nothing till now about hard drives..

I said a prayer for your friend, funny how problems are all relative.
So sad...

Great idea Z! Except for idiots like me that drop their external drives and blow 'em out . Luckily it was just the casing and the data was still good. But that was one scary moment

So my advice Annie, don't carry around the external drive
